Summer course with Andriana Yordanova and Julia Miller at

“Atelier Lyrique”

 

24th June – 26th July 2015

The course serves the interest of young singers as well as those of musicians beginning professional careers. Lessons are dedicated to improving the performing of lyrical works by different composers, chamber music, lieder in various styles and languages. For the advanced students dedicated to classical attention will be given to the 5 principles of belcanto

  • Voice, i.e. ear and physique
  • Sostenuto, i.e. breathing, vowel formation and resonance
  • Legato, i.e. the scale, light or dark tone and color
  • Flexibility, i.e. all florid singing
  • Phrasing,i.e. diction,expression,interpretation

The beginners will be introduced to basic techniques of the same principles but starting from simple exercises, phrases and songs according to the level of the students.

 

 

Miguel Rosales – baritoneMiguel Rosales

Miguel Rosales began his musical studies as a violinist under the tutorship of Fiona Giambra and Romeo Giacomotto, and formed part of the Malta Youth Orchestra between 2005-2006, the Euro Academy Youth Orchestra between 2002-2008, and the Junior College Orchestra between 2006-2014. He studied music theory with Kevin Bonello and Mro. Manoel Pirotta. Miguel eventually decided to switch to singing, and has been studying with Andriana Yordanova since 2011 and Claire Massa since 2012; both are still his tutors to this day. He has also attended master classes with German soprano Verena Rein. Miguel is currently reading for a B.A. (Hons.) in Voice Performance at the University of Malta. Miguel has sung as a chorister under the baton of many respectable conductors including Dr. John Galea, Mro Michael Laus, and Mro Damiano Binetti amongst others. He has also performed as a soloist in the Lunchtime Concert Series of St James Cavalier, St Paul’s Anglican Pro-Cathedral, and the Oratory of St Francis in Valletta, as well as in the Young Artists Series organized by the Teatru Salesjani.

 

Charlene-Portelli

Charlene Portelli – soprano

After studying the piano, Portelli started vocal training under Claire Massa at the Johann Strauss School of Music. She has participated as a chorus member and as soloist in a number of operas, sacred works and concerts. She formed part of Vocalise as well as Minigig. Other credits include a recital of operatic arias by Handel, Mozart, Puccini, Donizetti and Gounod and later on a recital of Spanish and German lieder which featured works by Schubert, Grieg, Strauss and Villa-Lobos. She has sung sacred works by Maltese composers Burlo and Bugeja and was the soloist in Frisina’s Oratorio ‘Apostolo delle Genti’. She has also had the opportunity of participating as a soloist in the Annual Christmas Concert and Movie Spectacular with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. She participated in Lidal North Opera Workshop in Oslo last summer. Recently she participated as a soloist in Christopher Muscat’s ‘Stabat Mater’. Portelli holds a Bachelor of Education degree and an ALCM diploma in pianoforte. She is currently a student of Bulgarian soprano Andriana Yordanova.

 

 

Kimberly Grech

Kimberly Grech – soprano

Twenty year old soprano, Kimberly Marie Grech, started her singing career in 2005 with English soprano Arleen J. Barlow, after winning a three month scholarship at Margaret Howard Theatre College in Herts, England. Kimberly is currently under the direction of Juliette Bisazza Zanni and the tutorship of Bulgarian soprano Andriana Yordanova. She performed in a number of productions including Britten’s operas: ‘The Little Sweep’, ‘Noah’s Fludde’ and Mozart’s ‘La Clemenza di Tito’ accompanied by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra together with ‘Rockestra 2011’, ‘Notte Bianca 2011, 2012 and 2013’, ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’, various recitals including one featuring in the ‘Performer’s Platform Concert Series’ held at St. James Cavalier, Oratorio of St. Francis, St. Paul’s Cathedral and several master classes including the latest with Prof. Laura Sarti as part of the ‘BOV opera festival’. Her repertoire includes pieces by; Mozart, Schubert, Puccini, Bellini, Strauss, Delibes, Dvořák, Lehar and Scarlatti. Kimberly has successfully completed her Diploma: Performance in Singing with a distinction. Furthermore, she is reading for a doctorate in Medicine and Surgery and teaching students Musical Theatre.

 

 

Alexia AgiusAlexia Agius – soprano

Alexia Agius is a young soprano from Naxxar who is new to the classical genres.
She is playing the clarinet from a very early age and taking active part in the music live of her own town.
Alexia is a member of the band club in Naxxar and her love to the music always brings her to new experiences. After many advises to take the singing more seriously she decided to dedicate more time to her voice and started lessons in the Atelier Liryque at Yuri Rozum School in August 2014

 

 

Julia MillerJulia Miller – accompanist

Hailing from the city of Lodz in Poland, Julia commenced her love affair with the piano at the age of six, and continued through primary and high school before going on to study at the Academy of Music in her home town, where she gained her Masters’ Degree in Piano Performance and Chamber Music.  During her time at the Academy Julia was a finalist in several piano competitions, and also towards the end of her studies complemented her education with professional performances both as a solo pianist, and as part of a classical trio.

After graduation from the Academy Julia has gone on to perform worldwide initially again as part of a trio, and later as a solo pianist serving the luxury cruise line industry.

 For two years, Julia Miller lived in Dublin, Ireland, where she combined performance engagements with her love of teaching, at the renowned Castleknock School of Music.

She coached several vocalists and also performed at the Dublin Feis Ceoil 2011, taking part in several vocal competitions as an accompanist.

Working closely with organisations such as The National Trust she has been allowed to perform in a wide variety of exceptional venues to both intimate and large audiences. Her most recent venue with the charity was the beautiful and haunting Mussenden Temple, perched on its cliff top in Northern Ireland.
In 2011 she was given the opportunity to mentor a fully staged musical in a popular theatre venue in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, which not only featured Julia but also a host of young aspiring musicians, singers and stage crew, all keen to learn what they could from her.

She was also often heard creating a beautiful atmosphere in one of the oldest restaurants and venues in Dublin city.

In 2012 Julia has moved to Malta where she is sharing her time between teaching, performing and coaching vocalists. She is a voice accompanist in well established Johann Strauss School of Music in Valletta , piano and theory teacher in School of Performing Arts by Drama Troupe as well as ballet accompanist in The Dance Academy in Attard.  In season 2013-2014 she was also one of the repetiteur of Teatru Manoel Youth Opera with which she performed twice in Manoel Theatre. She also coaches and accompanies students during international music exams. Julia can be heard around the island as a solo pianist as well as collaborating with other artists.

Recent appearances include St. James Cavalier Centre for Creativity ,The Mellieha Nights , St. Francis Oratory in Valletta, St. Paul’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta, Pallazzo Parisio in Naxxar , Manuel Theatre and Malta Cultural Institute at Le Meridien.

 

 

Andriana YordanovaAndriana Yordanova – voice technique and interpretation – soprano

Andriana Fenech Yordanova is a bulgarian-born soprano, residing in Malta for the last 12 years. She became one of the leading sopranos on the island, singing in different operas and concerts, as well as a loved guest in different events abroad.

After winning several scholarships she attended  Masterclasses in opera singing at the European Opera Centre in Manchester, England and Boris Christoff Academy in Rome –  Italy.

The role of Vitellia in La Clemenza di Tito of Mozart in the BOV Opera Festival 2014 will be her 3rd leading role on the stage of the Manoel Theater. Last year she finished her Masters in Vocal Pedagogy and Opera singing. At the moment she leads classes in voice techniqie at the Johann Strauss School of Music,  Masquarade Theater Arts School and consultations at the International Music School Yuri Rosum.  In the last years she is under the artistic guidance of the renowned Maltese soprano and tutor Ms.Juliette Bisazza.

Her repertoire includes major works by Verdi, Puccini, Mozart, Russian composers, Bizet, Bach, Handel,baroque operas and cantatas as well as a vast choice of Lieder and 20th century composers.
